Thank you; that's fascinating. I stayed in Orford many years ago, when the Ness was still out of bounds, and therefore grimly fascinating. It's reassuring to think of it recovering.
I went to school just along the coast from Orford, and I love visiting. It's a long way to go these days though, so thank you for the trip down memory lane.
Orford Ness is just one of several magical places Sebald wrote about. One day I'll try to recreate his 'Rings of Saturn' journey and write about it myself.
Thank you for this. Orford Ness sounds like an intriguing place - I intend to visit. I have been to the wonderfully named Foulness on the Essex Coast and was similarly struck by the military remains combined with the wildness of the landscape. The lighthouse that you mention reminds me of the one that still exists at Happisburgh on the Norfolk Coast. There the cliffs are also crumbling into the sea, and there are off-putting signs warning you not to swim because of underwater wreckages of machinery.
That's unheimlich indeed about your connections with the Sebald...

Thanks Dru. I intend to make a pilgrimage there once a year from now on if I can.

Hopefully you’ll be in a better frame of mind than he was!
